Housing program helps public servants get low-interest loans
Some of the state’s public service workers are getting help from a program that is expanding to help teachers, fire fighters, police officers and EMS workers get low-interest loans.
Drive down just about any street and you’ll see there’s no shortage of homes for sale. One program is giving some heroes just what they need to make the big purchase.
“The everyday heroes are the people that touch and serve the needs of South Carolinians in the state,” said Valarie Williams.
People like teachers, firefighters, police and EMS workers.
“We wanted to include them, to let them know that we support them and we wanted to show our support by investing in them,” said Williams.
The investment includes $40 million in low-interest loans for first-time home buyers though the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority.
Richland County deputy Harry Stubblefield says this program will help keep deputies in the neighborhoods they serve.
“Working closely with the citizens that we serve is a terrific opportunity for us to continue our efforts to reduce crime and the fear of crime,” said Stubblefield.
The Palmetto Hero program offers 5 percent loans, plus help with down payment and closing costs. Officials say don’t let the words “first-time” fool you.
“You can have owned a home previously in some of the counties that we operate in and still qualify for the program,” said Williams.
Heroes are encouraged to apply, because your American dream may be right around the corner.
